Make friends with an enemy

There’s always some person, or group, or ideal that we hate. Maybe it’s someone with extremely different political views, or someone who has done something to you or your family. Maybe it’s a group that is ostracised by society such as people who have been to prison, travellers, those with mental illness, or any of the other groups that are targeted as ‘trouble’.

Whoever it is, take some time to search them out, say ‘Hi’, get to know them a bit and listen to their story. Hear what life is like from their perspective. Maybe apologise for how you or society treats them, and offer a hand of friendship.

It’s not an easy thing to do. But it’s the radical call of the gospel: ‘You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbour and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, that you may be children of your Father in heaven.’
