Plan your meals and eat your leftovers for a month
Plan your meals and eat your leftovers for a whole month – aim to throw away 1/3rd less food waste.
The UK bins a whopping 12bn each year in wasted food, according to the government (though we’re slowly beginning to turn the tide – see this BBC article).
This action is about reducing your waste by planning well and being creative with what gets left over. Plan each meal that you’ll need to eat that week and how much you need to buy for the number of people that will be eating. It sounds like an exact science, but it’s really not that hard! If you have leftovers from a meal, store them in the fridge in airtight containers. They’ll make good lunches for the next day.
This is obviously easier to complete if you’re in charge of the food in your house. If someone else usually sorts out the food and the cooking in your house then talk to them and see if they will work with you on this action.
If you don’t have any leftovers, don’t worry. That just means you’re already wasting less. We recommend that you don’t eat mouldy leftovers!
